Region

El Mansouria is a coastal fishing district located in the state
of Ben Slimane, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco.

The Harvest of Gelidium

As the first autumn waves arrive, it’s not only surfers who become excited. It’s also the start of the harvest season for the red seaweed Gelidium  in the Basque region.

An entire industry is mobilized, with yields exceeding one thousand tons.  Gelidium , a red seaweed, is highly valued for its ability to form gel (and its recent discovery of antioxidant properties in lab tests).

It’s utilized in industries such as food, biotechnology, and cosmetics.  The seaweed grows on rocky reefs exposed to currents and waves, typically within the tidal range and at a depth of around 15 meters.

During the summer months, it grows steadily, reaching its maximum size in the early autumn. At this point, the ocean becomes more active.
